Why most vitamin C serums are weaker than they look

Walk down any skincare aisle and you will see vitamin C on almost every shelf. What the labels rarely explain is that vitamin C comes in many forms, and they are not equal. Many products use gentle derivatives of vitamin C because they are cheaper and easier to keep stable. The catch is that your skin cannot use those derivatives as they are. It first has to convert them into the active form, and some of the benefit is lost along the way. Others use the real thing but at cautious concentrations that keep costs down. We chose neither shortcut. Our Daily C Serum uses ascorbic acid, the pure and biologically active form studied in the original dermatology research, at a full 15 percent, which sits comfortably within the range shown to absorb effectively into skin [1, 2].

 

You can see the difference before you even apply it. Many vitamin C serums are as clear and thin as water, which often reflects a low concentration or a derivative form. Ours pours a deep warm gold, and every part of that colour is purposeful. It comes from the density of the formula itself, from ferulic acid, a naturally golden plant antioxidant, and from sea buckthorn and lotus botanicals, which bring their own antioxidant richness along with their natural orange and amber tones. Ferulic acid is not there for colour alone. In a landmark study, adding it to a solution of vitamins C and E stabilised the formula and doubled its antioxidant protection of the skin [3]. The colour is simply what a serious vitamin C formula looks like.

The science behind the ingredient is well established. Published research supports the role of topical ascorbic acid in collagen synthesis, in neutralising the free radicals generated by daily UV exposure, and in helping to reduce excess melanin production for a visibly more even tone [4, 5]. Our founder grew up inside a family supplement business, where the first question was never what sounds impressive on a label but what the body can genuinely absorb and use. We brought the same question to the skin, and this serum is the answer.

Your proof point. Use the serum every morning for one week and pay attention to how your skin looks in the mirror in natural light. Many people notice a fresher and brighter quality within days, especially if they have switched from a gentler derivative serum. Then take it further like a scientist would. Photograph your bare skin in the same light and the same spot on day one and again after four weeks, which is the kind of timeframe clinical studies use to measure visible change in tone.
